Runara vs Komoot on Apple Watch

Komoot is a route planner with a watch app. Runara is a workout app that follows routes. They overlap on the wrist and differ almost everywhere else.

Since January 2026 Komoot’s Apple Watch app navigates offline without the iPhone. If you are weighing it against Runara for hikes, rides and trail runs, this is where the two really differ, checked against Komoot’s own announcements and hands-on reviews.

What Komoot does well

Route planning is Komoot’s home turf: plan tours on the web or phone, discover routes others have shared, and send them to the watch for offline turn-by-turn navigation with no iPhone nearby. It records standalone, writes to Apple Health and speaks 20 languages. Your first map region is free; more regions are one-time purchases, and Premium adds extras such as weather on route.

Where Runara is different

Runara is built around the workout itself: screens you design, live heart rate zones, auto pause, a virtual pacer on your route, and CTL/ATL/TSB training load afterwards. It imports the GPX files Komoot and other planners export, follows them on offline maps for any region with off-route alerts, and needs no account at all. It does not plan routes or compute turn instructions.
