Offline maps on Apple Watch without your iPhone

Short answer

Apple Maps can download offline maps on the iPhone and sync them to the watch, in select regions, but that lives in the Maps app, not inside a workout following a route you imported. For a map that draws your route during a hike or trail run with no signal and no phone, use a workout app with its own offline maps, such as Runara or WorkOutDoors.

What Apple Maps offline does

In the Maps app on iPhone you can download an area for offline use. With “Sync with Apple Watch” turned on, the watch can use those maps on its own, and saved hikes and custom routes you draw in Maps come along with turn-by-turn haptics. Offline maps are available only in select regions, and topographic maps cover the US and Japan.

What Apple Maps does not do is put that map behind your heart rate and pace inside a workout, or follow a GPX file you brought from elsewhere.

Offline maps inside a workout

In Runara you export a map region on the iPhone, choosing an OpenStreetMap trail style with hiking paths and hillshade or Apple Maps, and it syncs to the watch. From then on the watch renders the map itself: no phone nearby, no signal, airplane mode, it keeps drawing. You can use the map as a full screen background behind your numbers, as a widget, or expanded with a press and hold, course-up if you prefer.

  1. In Runara’s Maps tab on iPhone, create a region around where you will be and pick its map style.

  2. Export it; the tiles sync to the watch over the direct device link.

  3. Add a map background or map widget to one of your workout screens.

  4. Start the workout, with a GPX route if you have one, and leave the phone behind if you like.

Questions
Do offline map regions cost extra?

Not in Runara: exporting regions is part of the one-time unlock, with no per-region purchases and no subscription.

Do I need a cellular Apple Watch?

No. The tiles are stored on the watch and GPS works without a connection, so a GPS-only Apple Watch draws the map just the same.

Can I follow a route on the offline map?

Yes. Import a GPX file, pick it when you start, and it draws over the offline map with off-route alerts.
